EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane that has been used on flat roofs for over 50 years. It is black in color, highly flexible even in cold temperatures, and is adhered or ballasted to the roof deck. TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a newer white or light-grey membrane that is heat-welded at the seams, creating a watertight bond stronger than the membrane itself. TPO reflects more sunlight and can help reduce cooling costs, while EPDM tends to be slightly more forgiving in extreme cold. Both are excellent options for Calgary flat and low-slope roofs.

Properly installed EPDM and TPO membranes typically last 20–30 years in Calgary's climate. The key variables are installation quality, seam integrity, and annual maintenance. Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles and UV exposure can stress improperly installed membranes at seams and flashings — which is why professional installation and periodic inspection are critical to achieving maximum membrane lifespan.

Flat and low-slope roofs do require more attentive maintenance than steeply pitched roofs. EPDM is particularly well-suited to cold climates because it remains flexible at temperatures as low as -45°C — it will not crack or become brittle in Alberta winters the way some other roofing materials can. TPO also performs well in cold weather when properly installed. Both membranes handle the expansion and contraction caused by Calgary's extreme temperature swings from summer highs to winter lows. Proper drain design and adequate insulation are equally important factors in winter performance.
